Buying a Used Car in Dubai: My Toyota Yaris Experience

One of the first questions many expats ask after moving to Dubai is whether they need a car.

While public transportation works well in certain areas, having a vehicle can make daily life significantly easier depending on where you live and work. In fact most people will be looking into buying a used car in Dubai.

After moving to Dubai in 2026, I decided to purchase a used Toyota Yaris rather than lease a vehicle or buy something more expensive.

Here’s why.

Do You Need a Car in Dubai?

The answer depends largely on your lifestyle.

If you live and work near a metro station, it may be possible to avoid owning a car.

However, many residential communities are not directly connected to the metro network.

In my case:

  • I live in Dubai Hills
  • I work in Motor City
  • I regularly train outdoors and travel around the city

Owning a car simply made life easier.

Why I Chose a Used Car

As a newcomer, I considered several options:

  • Leasing
  • Buying new
  • Buying used

I quickly decided that a used vehicle offered the best balance between cost and convenience.

A new car loses value immediately, while a well-maintained used vehicle can provide excellent value.

Why I Chose a Toyota Yaris

Many expats arriving in Dubai are tempted by SUVs or luxury vehicles.

I went in a different direction.

I purchased a:

Toyota Yaris 2020

with approximately:

59,000 km

for:

31,000 AED

The decision was simple.

I wanted:

  • Reliability
  • Low running costs
  • Affordable insurance
  • Easy maintenance

Most importantly, I preferred putting money into investments and travel rather than spending heavily on a car.

For my needs, a Toyota Yaris does everything required.

Monthly Running Costs

Because I live close to work, my transportation costs remain low.

Fuel

Average monthly fuel cost:

150 AED

This obviously depends on your commute and driving habits.

Should Expats Buy Cheap or Expensive Cars?

There is no single correct answer.

However, I believe many newcomers underestimate how quickly expenses add up when relocating.

Rent, deposits, furniture, utilities and daily life already require significant cash outflows.

For that reason, I personally preferred a practical and affordable vehicle rather than taking on additional financial commitments.

What My First-Year Car Budget Actually Looked Like

The purchase price was only the starting point. My Toyota Yaris cost AED 31,000, annual insurance was AED 1,727, registration and plates came to AED 455, and my fuel use has been around AED 150 per month because I drive relatively little. I also replaced the front brake pads with OEM parts for AED 160. That real example is why I recommend comparing total ownership cost, not just the listing price.

For a newcomer, a reliable mainstream car can also reduce the risk of tying up too much cash immediately after paying rent, deposits, furniture and utilities. In my case, keeping the car budget modest was a deliberate relocation decision rather than a compromise forced by availability.

Common Mistakes New Expats Make

Buying Too Much Car

Many people arrive in Dubai and immediately purchase a vehicle that stretches their budget.

A car should support your lifestyle, not become a financial burden.

Ignoring Insurance Costs

The purchase price is only part of the equation.

Insurance, registration and maintenance should all be included in your budget.

Rushing the Purchase

Take time to inspect the vehicle and compare options before committing.

My Recommendation

If you’re moving to Dubai and need a car, I would focus on:

  • Reliability
  • Total ownership cost
  • Insurance
  • Fuel consumption

rather than status or appearance.

A practical used vehicle can free up thousands of dirhams that can be invested, saved or spent enjoying life in Dubai.

For me, the Toyota Yaris was the right choice.
