Dubai school fees can range from a few thousand dirhams to more than AED 130,000 per child per year. Tuition is only the starting point: transport, uniforms, books, devices, meals, trips, activities and registration charges can add thousands more to the annual family budget.

The good news for parents arriving for the 2026–27 academic year is that Dubai has frozen tuition-fee increases at private schools for this school year. The existing approved fee still varies enormously by school, grade and curriculum, so families must compare the complete KHDA School Fees Fact Sheet rather than the tuition headline on an advertisement.
This guide explains realistic school-fee ranges, hidden costs, curricula, KHDA ratings, application timelines and ways to reduce the total. It is designed to help expat families calculate the real cost before choosing where to live or accepting a Dubai salary package.
How much are school fees in Dubai?
For practical relocation planning, annual tuition for a private school in Dubai can be grouped into four broad bands:
| School budget | Indicative annual tuition per child | Typical position |
|---|---|---|
| Low-cost | Below AED 15,000 | Available mainly in selected Indian, Pakistani and other value-focused schools |
| Affordable to mid-range | AED 15,000–35,000 | Broad choice across several curricula and locations |
| Upper mid-range | AED 35,000–70,000 | Many established British, American and IB options |
| Premium | AED 70,000–140,000+ | High-end campuses, premium brands and senior grades at leading schools |
These are planning ranges, not curriculum rules. The official KHDA directory includes Indian schools with tuition below AED 10,000 in some grades, mid-market British schools around AED 15,000–35,000, and premium international schools exceeding AED 130,000 in senior grades.
A useful rule is to add 10% to 25% to tuition for normal additional costs. Families using school transport, paid activities, meal plans or expensive devices can spend more.
Dubai private school fees are frozen for 2026–27
On 22 May 2026, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority confirmed that private schools in Dubai would not be permitted to increase tuition fees for the 2026–27 academic year. This means the approved tuition level should remain stable compared with the preceding year, although a child moving to a higher grade may still enter a grade with a different published fee.
The freeze applies to approved private-school tuition fees. It does not necessarily freeze every optional service offered by a third party, such as transport, catering, extracurricular programmes or uniforms. Parents should still request the new academic year’s complete fee schedule.
Dubai currently offers 17 curricula and is expanding affordable capacity. KHDA reported that approximately 9,000 affordable places were added during the 2025–26 year, with about 7,500 more planned over the following two academic years.

Understanding Dubai school fee ranges
Schools below AED 15,000 per year
Dubai does have genuinely low-cost private education, particularly within the Indian, Pakistani and Ministry of Education segments. Some official KHDA listings show fees below AED 5,000 in early grades, while other well-established value schools sit between AED 10,000 and AED 15,000.
Low tuition does not automatically mean poor education. Examine the inspection report, class sizes, examination outcomes, teacher retention, facilities and inclusion provision. Lower-cost schools can have high demand and waiting lists.
AED 15,000–35,000 per year
This band offers a wider selection of curricula and locations. It includes value-focused British schools, many Indian schools through senior grades and selected American or international options.
Facilities may be more practical than luxurious, but educational quality can still be strong. Families should compare the cost of transport because a cheaper school on the opposite side of Dubai may not be economical or healthy for the child’s daily routine.
AED 35,000–70,000 per year
Many established British, American and International Baccalaureate schools fall into this range. Campuses commonly include extensive sports, science, arts and technology facilities. Tuition often rises as the child moves into secondary and post-16 education.
At this price, parents should expect clear evidence of teaching quality, pastoral support, university guidance and measurable student progress—not only an impressive campus tour.
AED 70,000–140,000+ per year
Premium schools can exceed AED 100,000 and the most expensive senior-grade fees now pass AED 130,000. These schools may offer small classes, selective admissions, premium facilities, established international brands and extensive extracurricular opportunities.
A premium fee is not an automatic guarantee that the school is the best fit for your child. Review the KHDA report and ask how the school supports the individual pupil rather than judging the reception area or brand name.
Dubai school fees by curriculum
Curriculum affects teaching style, academic calendar, examination pathway and the ease of returning to another country. It also influences price, but there is substantial variation within every curriculum.
British curriculum
British schools normally follow the English National Curriculum, with GCSE or IGCSE followed by A Levels, BTEC or IB pathways depending on the school. Dubai offers British tuition from the mid-teens to well over AED 100,000.
This curriculum can suit families likely to move to the UK or another British-system school. Check whether the school continues through Year 13, which examination boards it uses and whether post-16 options fit the child’s plans.
American curriculum
American schools generally award a high-school diploma, with variations in state standards, accreditation, Advanced Placement and university preparation. Tuition commonly ranges from affordable or mid-market levels to more than AED 70,000.
Ask about accreditation, AP availability, standardised assessments and graduate university destinations. The word “American” alone does not describe the academic strength of the programme.
International Baccalaureate
IB schools can offer the Primary Years, Middle Years, Diploma or Career-related Programme. Full-continuum schools are frequently in the upper-middle or premium price range, although costs vary.
The IB can be valuable for internationally mobile families, but the Diploma Programme is academically demanding. Ask about subject availability, average results, counselling and whether the student is better suited to IB, A Levels or another route.
Indian curriculum
Indian schools generally follow CBSE or CISCE/ICSE pathways and often provide some of Dubai’s most affordable private-school options. Tuition can begin below AED 10,000 and rise above AED 30,000 at more expensive schools or higher grades.
Demand can be intense at respected schools. Check admissions dates carefully because the academic year typically runs from April to March rather than September to June.
French curriculum
Dubai has French schools following programmes recognised or aligned with the French education system. Fees vary by campus and grade, and demand can be high among French-speaking families.
Confirm homologation status, language support, examination pathways and how easily a child who is not already fluent can join the programme.
Other curricula
Dubai also has German, Swiss, Australian, Japanese, Chinese, Philippine, Pakistani, SABIS and other international options. A less common curriculum may be ideal for continuity, but consider what happens if the family later moves to a country where that pathway is unavailable.
Why school fees increase with the child’s grade
Tuition normally rises as children progress. Secondary school requires specialist teachers, laboratories, examination administration, career counselling and a wider subject range. Post-16 fees can be substantially higher than early-years tuition at the same school.
When comparing schools for a young child, do not look only at the current FS or KG fee. Download the full fee table through Year 13 or Grade 12 and model the future cost.
For example, a school might charge AED 25,000 in primary, AED 35,000 in lower secondary and AED 50,000 in senior school. Even with no annual fee increase, the family’s bill rises when the child changes fee band.
The real costs beyond tuition
Application fee
Schools can charge an application or assessment fee. It may be non-refundable even if the child is not offered a place, provided the charge follows the approved fee framework and is disclosed.
Registration and re-enrolment deposit
A deposit secures the place and is normally deducted from tuition according to KHDA rules and the parent-school contract. Understand the deadline and refund conditions before paying several schools simultaneously.
Books and educational resources
Books may be included, mandatory or available from an external supplier. One KHDA Fees Fact Sheet example shows tuition of AED 18,499 but a total of AED 24,736 after mandatory books, laboratory, computer and activity fees.
Uniform
Families may need everyday uniforms, PE kits, shoes, swimwear and branded accessories. Allow approximately AED 500–2,000 per child depending on the school, number of sets and whether second-hand sales are available.
Laptop or tablet
Bring-your-own-device policies can add AED 1,500–6,000. Ask for the required specification before purchasing. A device bought too early may not support the school’s management software.
School transport
Bus fees commonly add several thousand dirhams annually. The price depends on distance and operator. One official KHDA fact-sheet example lists AED 6,800–7,500 for transport.
Transport can also add a long daily journey. Ask for the approximate pickup time, route duration, adult supervision, GPS tracking and policy for extracurricular days.
Meals and canteen
A daily meal plan can add thousands annually. Packed lunches may be cheaper, but check food and allergy rules.
Trips and activities
Local trips can be modest, while international sports, music, Model UN or expedition programmes can cost thousands. Determine which experiences are essential to the curriculum and which are optional.
Examinations
External examination charges for GCSE, A Level, AP or IB may be passed through separately. Senior-year budgets should include board fees, resits, university applications and possibly tutoring.
Learning support
A child requiring individual support, therapy or a shadow teacher can create significant additional expense. Ask for a written inclusion plan and cost breakdown before accepting the place.
How to use the KHDA School Fees Fact Sheet
Every private school in Dubai must provide an annual School Fees Fact Sheet. This one-page document separates:
- approved tuition;
- mandatory fees;
- required educational supplies;
- optional services;
- approved discounts; and
- available scholarships where applicable.
Access it through the KHDA school directory, the school website or the Parent-School Contract. The fact sheet is valid for one academic year and can be verified through its QR code.
Use it to ask precise questions:
- What is mandatory for my child’s exact grade?
- Can required supplies be bought outside the school?
- Which optional items do most pupils actually use?
- What discount is guaranteed in writing?
- What changes if we withdraw before term starts?
KHDA ratings and school quality
KHDA inspection ratings include Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak and Very Weak. The full report is more useful than the headline rating because it shows differences between phases, subjects, leadership, wellbeing and inclusion.
In the 2023–24 inspection cycle, KHDA reported that 81% of Dubai private-school students attended schools rated Good or better. Full inspections were paused for most established schools during 2024–25 and 2025–26, while targeted monitoring continued. As a result, a displayed overall rating may come from an earlier full inspection.
When reading a report, focus on:
- quality of teaching in your child’s phase;
- student progress rather than attainment alone;
- English, mathematics, science and Arabic outcomes;
- wellbeing and safeguarding;
- support for students of determination;
- leadership and teacher turnover; and
- the school’s progress on previous recommendations.
A Good school at AED 25,000 may represent better value and fit than an Outstanding school at AED 90,000. Rating should inform the decision, not make it alone.
How to choose a school in Dubai
Start with curriculum continuity
Consider where the child studied previously and where the family may move next. Changing from one curriculum to another can affect grade placement, subject selection and university prerequisites.
Set an all-in budget
Decide the maximum total per child, including transport and extras. Do not tour schools that are financially unsustainable unless a confirmed scholarship or employer allowance makes them viable.
Filter by location
Dubai traffic can turn a geographically short route into a long commute. Map school and office journeys during morning and afternoon peak times before choosing a home.
Our guide to the best areas to live in Dubai can help you compare communities, but families should place school travel near the top of the housing decision.
Tour while classes are operating
Observe pupils, classrooms and staff interactions rather than only facilities. Ask to meet the relevant phase leader and inclusion team if applicable.
Ask evidence-based questions
- What is the average class size in this grade?
- How many teachers left last year?
- How is a new child supported socially and academically?
- What progress data is shared with parents?
- Which activities are included in tuition?
- How are bullying and safeguarding concerns handled?
- What are recent examination and university outcomes?
- Is there a waiting list for the next grade?
School admissions and required documents
Most September-calendar schools accept applications throughout the year subject to space, while popular schools may fill places far in advance. Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools generally follow an April-to-March academic year.
Applications commonly require:
- child’s passport;
- passport and Emirates ID copies for parents;
- child’s UAE residence visa and Emirates ID when available;
- birth certificate;
- vaccination or medical record;
- recent school reports;
- transfer or leaving certificate;
- passport photographs;
- assessment or interview; and
- documents supporting learning needs.
For Grade 2/Year 3 and above, KHDA registration generally requires a transfer certificate or evidence of completing the previous grade. A certificate issued abroad may need attestation depending on the issuing country and situation.
Compulsory education begins from Grade 1. Age-placement rules can change, so confirm the correct year group with the school and KHDA for the 2026–27 intake rather than relying on an old online calculator.
Your child also needs an appropriate residence status. See the Dubai family visa guide for sponsorship steps.

How to reduce school costs
Negotiate the employment package
Some employers provide an education allowance per child. Confirm whether it is paid directly, reimbursed against invoices or included in salary. Ask about caps, eligible fees, child limits and the treatment of tax or exchange-rate differences in your home payroll.
Sibling discounts
Schools may offer a percentage discount for second and subsequent children. Check whether it applies to tuition only and whether the oldest or youngest child receives it.
Founders and corporate discounts
New schools sometimes offer founders’ reductions, while employers or residential communities may negotiate corporate rates. Obtain the duration and renewal terms in writing.
Scholarships
Academic, sporting, artistic and performing-arts scholarships can reduce tuition. Understand the selection process and ongoing performance conditions.
Early or annual payment
A school may offer a discount for full payment, but do not sacrifice emergency liquidity without reading the refund policy. Paying by instalment can be worth a small price difference.
Buy supplies independently
KHDA distinguishes mandatory fees from supplies that may be purchased externally where available. Compare uniform resale groups, book exchanges and approved outside suppliers.
School location can change the real cost
Living near school can eliminate AED 6,000–10,000 of annual bus fees, reduce fuel and return hours to the family every week. However, rent near a sought-after school may be higher.
Compare two complete scenarios:
- higher rent near school with short travel; and
- lower rent farther away plus bus fees, fuel, tolls and time.
A home should not be chosen until a likely school place is identified. Conversely, do not pay a non-refundable school deposit before checking whether the daily commute is sustainable.
Use our guide to renting an apartment in Dubai to incorporate deposits, agency commission, Ejari and utilities.
Deposits, withdrawals and refunds
Admission, registration, re-enrolment and refund rules are governed through KHDA’s fee framework and the Parent-School Contract. The precise outcome depends on when you withdraw and whether the child has started attending.
Before paying, request written answers to:
- Is the application fee refundable?
- Is the registration deposit deducted from tuition?
- What happens if the visa is refused?
- What happens if the family relocates before term?
- Which notice date controls the refund?
- Are bus and meal fees refunded separately?
- Are promotional discounts lost after withdrawal?
Do not rely on a salesperson’s verbal promise. The signed Parent-School Contract and approved Fees Fact Sheet are the key documents.
Frequently asked questions about Dubai school fees
How much does private school cost in Dubai?
Annual tuition ranges from below AED 5,000 at some low-cost schools to more than AED 130,000 in premium senior grades. Many expat families pay between AED 20,000 and AED 70,000 per child before extras.
Are Dubai school fees increasing in 2026–27?
No general tuition increase is permitted for private schools for the 2026–27 academic year under the KHDA fee freeze announced in May 2026.
Is school free for expat children in Dubai?
No. Expat families generally use fee-paying private schools. Non-UAE nationals may access government schools as fee-paying students subject to eligibility and available places.
What is included in tuition?
It varies. Mandatory and optional items are listed in the school’s KHDA Fees Fact Sheet. Transport, uniforms, devices, meals, trips and activities are often additional.
What is the KHDA School Fees Fact Sheet?
It is the official one-page annual breakdown of approved tuition, mandatory fees, supplies, optional services, discounts and scholarships for a private school and grade.
Which curriculum is cheapest?
Indian and Pakistani curriculum schools include many of Dubai’s lowest-cost options, but price varies within every curriculum. Affordable British and American choices also exist.
Are premium schools always rated Outstanding?
No. Price and KHDA rating are not the same measure. Read the inspection report and compare teaching, progress, wellbeing and inclusion for the child’s phase.
Do school fees increase as children get older?
Usually. Secondary and post-16 tuition is often higher because of specialist subjects, laboratories, examinations and counselling. Compare the full fee progression before enrolling.
How much should I budget beyond tuition?
Add approximately 10%–25% for normal extras. Transport, premium activities, devices, meals or learning support can push the total higher.
Can my employer pay school fees?
Some Dubai employment packages include an education allowance. Confirm the annual cap, number of children, reimbursable items and payment procedure in the written offer.
Can I pay school fees in instalments?
Many schools divide fees by term or offer payment plans. Banks may also promote education-payment plans, but compare card fees and financing costs carefully.
When should I apply for a Dubai school?
Apply as early as practical, especially for popular schools and year groups. September-calendar and April-calendar schools have different admissions cycles.
Do children need a UAE residence visa to enrol?
Schools can begin admissions while relocation documents are being processed, but KHDA registration normally requires the appropriate identity and residence records. Confirm deadlines with the school.
Where can I compare official fees?
Use the KHDA online school directory and open the Fees Fact Sheet for the exact school, curriculum and grade. Do not rely solely on third-party rankings.
