Content type: Firsthand bank review + official product documents · Editorial method
This Emirates NBD review is based on my experience using the bank as my main everyday bank after moving to Dubai, combined with the bank’s current published account information. I use Emirates NBD for my salary, daily spending and rent cheques, with separate current and savings accounts visible inside the same app.
My short verdict is that Emirates NBD is one of the most practical traditional banks for a salaried expat in Dubai. Its main strengths are a large local presence, a proper current account with cheque-book access, a capable mobile app and a broad range of products. It is particularly convenient when your employer already supports salary transfer to the bank.
It is not automatically the best choice for everyone. Standard savings rates are modest, international payments may involve intermediary or exchange-rate costs, and support can feel less personal than at a smaller bank. You also need to understand the difference between permanent account conditions and temporary promotional rates.
Emirates NBD review: the quick verdict
| Category | My assessment |
|---|---|
| Best for | Salaried Dubai residents who want a full-service bank, salary account, cheque book and extensive digital banking |
| Main advantage | A strong combination of physical infrastructure and a feature-rich app |
| Main drawback | Ordinary savings rates are not especially competitive unless you qualify for a promotional or specialist account |
| Published salary threshold | AED 5,000 for the standard payroll current account |
| Non-salaried option | Standard current account with a published AED 3,000 minimum balance |
| Account opening fee | None for the standard current account |
| Cheque book | Available; first cheque book is free on the standard current account |
| Mobile banking | ENBD X, with more than 200 services advertised by the bank |
| Overall verdict | A very good primary bank for many expats, but compare savings and foreign-exchange costs separately |
If you are comparing several institutions, read our broader best banks in Dubai for expats guide. This review focuses specifically on what Emirates NBD is like as an everyday resident bank.
My experience with Emirates NBD after moving to Dubai
I moved to Dubai in 2026 and chose Emirates NBD as my main salary bank. My setup is deliberately more organised than a single account:
- A current account receiving my salary and covering everyday payments
- A separate Millionaire Current Account used to isolate rent money and rent cheques
- Several savings accounts for different cash objectives
This structure is useful because Dubai expenses do not all follow a monthly rhythm. Rent may be paid with one, two or several post-dated cheques, while utilities and daily spending leave the account monthly. Keeping rent money separate makes it less likely that a large cheque will collide with normal spending.
The bank also offered me a temporary interest promotion after moving my salary. My particular offer paid up to 6% per year for six months, subject to maintaining the qualifying balance and meeting the campaign conditions. That was attractive for cash I needed to keep liquid during my relocation, but it should not be mistaken for the permanent return on every Emirates NBD account. Promotions change, eligibility is targeted and the normal rate may be much lower after the campaign.
For normal use, the biggest practical benefit has been having salary, current accounts, savings, cards, transfers, statements and service requests in one interface. Emirates NBD is not the most exciting financial product in the UAE, but as a central operating bank it covers the everyday requirements of living in Dubai well.
Emirates NBD pros and cons for expats
Advantages
- Established Dubai bank: Emirates NBD has a major branch, ATM and cash-deposit-machine presence.
- Useful salary account: the standard current account includes a debit card and cheque-book facility.
- Strong digital banking: ENBD X handles most routine banking and many administrative requests.
- Easy separation of money: additional current or savings accounts can help organise rent, emergency funds and spending.
- Multiple currencies: savings accounts are available in AED and several foreign currencies.
- Full product range: cards, loans, deposits, investments and wealth services are available within one group.
- Physical support exists: unlike an app-only bank, you can use branches and service centres when necessary.
Disadvantages
- Standard savings returns are low: the basic savings account currently publishes 0.20% per year.
- Promotional rates are conditional: attractive headline rates may require new money, salary transfer, a new account or a limited campaign period.
- Minimum-balance rules matter: customers who do not maintain salary or relationship conditions may face fees or package changes.
- Support is large-bank support: simple requests are digital, but unusual problems may require persistence or a branch visit.
- Foreign exchange deserves comparison: a transfer can be advertised as free while the exchange rate or intermediary-bank deduction still costs money.
- Product choice can be confusing: current accounts, savings accounts and packages have overlapping names and different eligibility rules.
Which Emirates NBD account is best for expats?
Standard Current Account
For most salaried expats, the standard Emirates NBD Current Account is the logical starting point. It is available in AED and includes:
- No account-opening fee
- Free debit card
- Cheque-book facility
- Up to ten free teller transactions per month, depending on the banking package
- Access to mobile and online banking
Emirates NBD currently states a minimum salary transfer of AED 5,000 for payroll customers or a minimum AED 3,000 balance for non-salaried customers. Those are product-level conditions; your banking package may have additional salary or relationship requirements.
Millionaire Current Account
The Millionaire Current Account is still a functioning current account, not an investment strategy. It includes a cheque book and creates entries into Emirates NBD prize draws according to the monthly average balance.
For salaried customers, the bank publishes a minimum of AED 5,000 and one draw entry for every AED 8,000 of monthly average balance. For non-salaried or self-employed customers, it publishes a minimum AED 3,000 balance and one entry for every AED 10,000.
I use this account for a practical reason rather than the prize draw: it separates rent money from ordinary spending while preserving cheque-book access. The chance of winning should never determine how much cash you keep in a low-interest account.
Standard Savings Account
The standard Savings Account is available in AED and several currencies, including USD, GBP and CAD. Emirates NBD currently publishes:
- 0.20% annual interest
- AED 5,000 minimum balance
- No account-opening fee
- Up to ten free teller transactions depending on package
It is useful for organisation and liquidity, but 0.20% is not a compelling long-term return. Keep only operational cash there unless you have a specific reason or a better promotional rate.
Plus Saver and other higher-interest options
Emirates NBD periodically promotes Plus Saver or salary-transfer accounts with higher rates. As of July 2026, the bank advertises a Plus Saver campaign paying 5% per year on qualifying new money for a limited period, while its broader salary-transfer marketing mentions rates up to 6% under campaign conditions.
Read the campaign terms carefully. Check the eligible balance, whether the rate is annualised, the campaign end date, salary threshold, new-money definition, maximum reward and when interest is paid. A 6% annual rate offered for six months does not mean you receive 6% of the balance after six months; the rate is annualised.
Banking packages: Plus Maximizer, Beyond and Priority
Your account sits inside a banking package, and the package affects benefits and service fees. Emirates NBD currently shows:
- Plus Maximizer: generally aimed at current-account salaries from AED 5,000 to AED 14,999
- Beyond: generally aimed at current-account salaries from AED 15,000 to AED 49,999
- Priority Banking: for customers meeting higher salary or relationship-balance criteria
Do not select a package only for a welcome gift. Look at recurring conditions, free transactions, card fees, international transfers and the consequences if your salary stops.
Emirates NBD account requirements for expats
A UAE-resident expat opening a personal current account will normally need:
- Original Emirates ID and a copy
- Passport copy
- UAE residence details
- Salary evidence for a salary-transfer account
The bank lists several acceptable forms of salary evidence:
- A salary-transfer letter, normally issued recently
- Appointment letter or employment contract
- Recent payslip
- Statement showing the previous month’s salary
- Consolidated HR letter for a bulk employer arrangement
Additional documents can be requested. The bank must complete identity, residency, employment, tax-residency and anti-money-laundering checks, so the online form is not a guarantee of immediate approval.
If you have only just arrived, your banking timeline depends heavily on your residence process. You will normally find it easier once your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID are progressing or complete.
Can a non-resident open an Emirates NBD account?
Emirates NBD publishes documentation for non-resident applicants, including passport and visa-page copies plus proof such as recent utility bills, bank statements or a reference letter from a home-country bank. However, non-resident access is more limited and subject to approval. A non-resident should not assume they will receive the same current account, cheque book, credit facilities or digital opening process as a UAE resident.
How to open an Emirates NBD account
Step 1: Decide what the account must do
If it will receive salary and issue rent cheques, start with a current account. If you only need a separate savings pot, compare the savings products and withdrawal rules.
Step 2: Confirm your package and minimum conditions
Check the current salary threshold, monthly average balance and fall-below fee in the Key Facts Statement. Ask what happens if your salary stops or you change employer.
Step 3: Prepare the documents
Use matching names and current details on your passport, Emirates ID, employment documents, UAE mobile number and address. Inconsistent information can delay compliance checks.
Step 4: Apply digitally or through a branch
Emirates NBD offers digital account opening for eligible customers. A branch may be preferable when you have an unusual residency status, multiple nationalities, self-employment income or a specific cheque-book requirement.
Step 5: Activate the card and ENBD X
Register your mobile banking, activate Smart Pass and review transfer limits. Smart Pass is the bank’s app-based authorisation system and replaces reliance on SMS codes for many transactions.
Step 6: Request and protect the cheque book
Order the cheque book only after the account is active and your details are correct. Store it securely, record every post-dated cheque and never issue one without sufficient funds.

ENBD X app review
ENBD X is central to the Emirates NBD experience. The bank advertises access to more than 200 services, with many completed instantly in the app.
What you can do in ENBD X
- View current, savings and card transactions
- Move money between your own accounts
- Add beneficiaries and make local or international transfers
- Pay utilities, telecommunications and other bills
- Download statements and request bank letters
- Manage cards, payments, limits and security controls
- Track service requests
- Open selected additional accounts
- Access investment services if required
For my own multi-account setup, the app’s value is visibility. I can separate salary, rent and savings without losing the overall view of my cash.
Smart Pass and changing phones
Smart Pass authorises transactions through the app with a PIN or generated token. This is more secure than depending only on SMS, but it makes your registered phone and app access important. Before replacing a phone or changing your UAE number, review the bank’s migration process and keep your identity documents accessible.
Where the app cannot solve everything
Complex compliance reviews, blocked accounts, disputed transfers, account closure or unusual documentation may still require human support. A bank with branches remains useful precisely for the cases that do not fit a standard digital workflow.
Emirates NBD cheque book and paying rent
Cheque books remain relevant in Dubai because many annual tenancy contracts use post-dated cheques. Emirates NBD’s standard current account includes a cheque-book facility, and the first cheque book is currently advertised as free.
My approach is to keep rent funds in a dedicated current account. This creates a clean audit trail and reduces the risk of accidentally spending money reserved for the next rent cheque.
Practical cheque rules
- Write the landlord or management company’s name exactly as instructed.
- Check the date, amount in words and amount in numbers.
- Use the same signature registered with the bank.
- Photograph or scan every cheque before handing it over.
- Record the cheque number and due date.
- Fund the account well before presentation day.
- Do not close or change the account while outstanding cheques remain.
A returned cheque can create bank fees, landlord disputes and serious practical problems. Our Dubai renting guide explains deposits, agency fees, Ejari and cheque structures.
Emirates NBD fees and minimum balances
The account-opening fee is not the main cost to watch; ongoing package conditions are more important. Emirates NBD’s published charges vary by product and package, so use the latest schedule rather than an old blog post.
| Item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Account opening | Currently advertised as free for the standard current and savings accounts |
| Salary requirement | Standard current account currently lists AED 5,000 for payroll customers |
| Non-salaried minimum | Standard current account currently lists AED 3,000 |
| Savings minimum | Standard savings account currently lists AED 5,000 |
| Teller transactions | Free allowance varies by banking package |
| Other UAE ATM | Check the fee before using a non-Emirates NBD ATM |
| Card replacement | Check debit or credit card schedule |
| International card use | Consider foreign-currency conversion and international transaction fees |
| Bank letters | Some app requests are free; branch or other-channel fees may differ |
| Account closure | Check early-closure and service rules before leaving the UAE |
A salary account may be reclassified if salary stops being credited for an extended period. If you resign, become self-employed or leave the UAE, contact the bank before the account falls outside its package conditions.
Is Emirates NBD good for savings?
It is good for organising accessible cash, but the standard Savings Account is not a high-yield product. Its published 0.20% annual rate is far below the best temporary UAE deposit campaigns.
Emirates NBD becomes more competitive when you qualify for a targeted salary-transfer, new-money or Plus Saver promotion. These offers can be useful for an emergency fund or cash awaiting a planned expense, as long as you understand the expiry date.
Questions to ask before chasing a promotional rate
- Is the rate annualised?
- How many months does it apply?
- Does it require a new salary transfer?
- Does only “new money” qualify?
- Is there a minimum or maximum eligible balance?
- When is the interest credited?
- What rate applies after the promotion?
- Can you withdraw without losing the rate?
Do not keep long-term investment money in a low-interest current account simply because it is convenient. Separate emergency liquidity, planned expenses and investments according to their time horizon and risk.
Local and international transfers
Transfers inside the UAE
ENBD X supports transfers to UAE bank accounts and mobile-number payments. Beneficiary activation and transaction authorisation are handled digitally for normal cases.
International transfers
Emirates NBD states that international transfers initiated through mobile or online banking are free from its side, but it also warns that other banks may charge. “Free transfer” does not necessarily mean the recipient gets the best final amount.
Compare:
- The AED-to-destination-currency exchange rate
- Correspondent and beneficiary-bank charges
- Whether fees are set to SHA, OUR or BEN
- Transfer speed
- The final amount received
For large conversions, request or calculate the all-in cost rather than focusing on the visible transfer fee. A specialist currency service may sometimes be cheaper, while the bank may be more convenient for a simple or urgent payment.
Emirates NBD debit and credit cards
Debit card
The standard current account includes a free debit card. It is suitable for everyday AED spending, cash withdrawals and online payments. Use the app’s card controls and transaction notifications, and avoid unnecessary dynamic currency conversion when travelling.
Credit cards
Emirates NBD offers many cashback, airline, lifestyle and premium cards. The right card depends on real spending, not the advertised welcome bonus.
Before applying, calculate:
- Annual fee after any first-year waiver
- Minimum monthly spend for benefits
- Reward caps and excluded transactions
- Foreign-currency fee
- Airport lounge conditions
- Interest and late-payment charges
Pay the full statement balance every month. Rewards rarely compensate for revolving credit-card interest.
Branches, ATMs and customer service
A major reason to choose Emirates NBD over an app-only bank is infrastructure. The bank publishes a network of more than 200 branches and 900 ATMs and cash-deposit machines across the UAE and overseas.
That is particularly useful when you need to deposit cash, collect or discuss cheques, verify identity, solve a document issue or handle a transaction that the app cannot complete.
The trade-off is that a large retail bank handles a very high number of customers. Online customer reviews frequently complain about queues, telephone menus and slow resolution of unusual cases. Reviews naturally overrepresent negative experiences, but they reveal a sensible lesson: keep records.
How to make support easier
- Try the app’s service request first for routine documents.
- Save the request number and screenshots.
- Use secure bank channels, not social-media direct messages.
- Bring your Emirates ID and passport to a branch.
- Ask for written confirmation of fee waivers or package changes.
- Escalate formally if a complaint is not resolved.
Is Emirates NBD safe?
Emirates NBD Bank P.J.S.C. is licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE and is one of the country’s largest banking groups. That does not eliminate operational, fraud or cybersecurity risk, so customers still need good habits.
- Never share a PIN, password, Smart Pass code or card security code.
- Do not approve an app notification you did not initiate.
- Use only the official website, app and verified telephone numbers.
- Lock a missing card immediately.
- Keep your UAE mobile number and email current.
- Review transactions regularly.
- Report an unauthorised transaction immediately and keep the case number.
Fraudsters often impersonate banks while mentioning Emirates ID updates, account suspension or reward points. A real bank employee does not need your full authentication credentials.
Emirates NBD alternatives
| Alternative | May suit you better if… |
|---|---|
| ADCB | You want another large full-service UAE bank and prefer its salary package or service model |
| Wio Personal | You value digital money organisation and competitive savings features more than branches and cheque books |
| Mashreq NEO | You prefer digital onboarding within an established UAE banking group |
| FAB | Your employer, salary package or Abu Dhabi connections make FAB more convenient |
| HSBC or Standard Chartered | You already have an international relationship and prioritise cross-border banking |
| Dubai Islamic Bank | You specifically want Sharia-compliant banking products |
Many expats use two banks: a traditional salary bank for cheques, employer payments and branch access, plus a digital account for savings or spending features. Do not open multiple accounts unless you can track every minimum balance, card fee and closure requirement.

Emirates NBD review FAQ
Is Emirates NBD good for expats?
Yes, particularly for salaried UAE residents who need a primary bank with salary transfer, a cheque book, debit card, branches, ATMs and comprehensive mobile banking. Digital-only banks may offer better savings features, but they do not always replace a full current account.
What is the minimum salary for an Emirates NBD account?
The standard current account currently publishes a minimum salary transfer of AED 5,000 for payroll customers. Banking packages have their own salary bands: Plus Maximizer is advertised for AED 5,000 to AED 14,999, while Beyond starts at AED 15,000 for current-account customers.
Can I open an Emirates NBD account without a salary?
The standard current account is also open to non-salaried and self-employed individuals, subject to approval and a currently published AED 3,000 minimum balance. Documentation and package conditions differ from a salary account.
Can I open the account before receiving my Emirates ID?
Resident account opening normally relies on your Emirates ID and passport. Some processes may begin while the ID is being issued, but full resident banking access is generally easier after your immigration documents are complete.
Does Emirates NBD provide a cheque book?
Yes. The standard and Millionaire current accounts offer cheque-book facilities, and the bank currently advertises the first cheque book as free. Savings accounts do not serve the same cheque-writing purpose.
Is the Emirates NBD 6% savings rate permanent?
No. Rates up to 6% are promotional and subject to campaign terms such as salary transfer, eligible accounts, qualifying balances, new money and a limited period. Check the rate that applies after the promotion ends.
Is the ENBD X app good?
It is one of Emirates NBD’s strongest features. It provides account and card management, payments, statements, transfers, service requests and security controls. Complex compliance or account problems may still require support.
Are Emirates NBD international transfers free?
The bank currently states that transfers initiated through mobile and online banking are free from Emirates NBD’s side, but other banks may charge. Exchange-rate margins and correspondent fees can still affect the final amount received.
Can I use Emirates NBD to pay rent in Dubai?
Yes. A current account with a cheque book is suitable for post-dated rent cheques. Keep enough money available before each cheque date and maintain a record of every cheque issued.
What happens to my Emirates NBD account if I leave my job?
If salary stops, the account or banking package may be reclassified and minimum-balance rules can change. Loans or credit cards may also affect the process. Contact the bank before your final salary and visa cancellation.
Is Emirates NBD better than Wio?
They solve different needs. Emirates NBD is stronger as a traditional salary bank with branches, ATMs and cheque books. Wio may be more attractive for digital budgeting or savings features. Some residents use Emirates NBD as the primary bank and a digital bank as a secondary account.
Final verdict: should you bank with Emirates NBD?
Emirates NBD is a strong default choice for a salaried expat moving to Dubai. It does the essential jobs well: receiving salary, issuing rent cheques, supporting everyday payments, providing broad ATM access and allowing most account management through ENBD X.
My own setup works because I use the bank as an operating hub rather than assuming every Emirates NBD product is the best in its category. The salary account handles income and spending, the separate current account protects rent money, and savings accounts organise cash. Promotional interest is a temporary bonus, not the basis of the decision.
Choose Emirates NBD if you want a practical, established primary bank and value cheque-book and branch access. Compare alternatives if your priorities are the highest possible savings rate, premium customer service or the cheapest international currency conversion. Most importantly, read the live package conditions and fee schedule before applying.
