This FAB review examines whether First Abu Dhabi Bank is a good everyday bank for expats living in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE. FAB is one of the country’s largest full-service banks, with current and savings accounts, branches, ATMs, cards, loans, investments and a capable mobile app. Its most relevant everyday product for many professionals is the FAB One Account.
The FAB One Account is particularly attractive if you earn at least AED 10,000 per month. It has no minimum-balance charge, includes a Platinum Mastercard debit card, offers four free monthly withdrawals from other UAE ATMs and includes selected lifestyle benefits. Non-salaried residents can instead qualify with an initial deposit of AED 10,000.
FAB also offers the iSave Account, currently advertising 4% p.a. on qualifying new funds until 31 August 2026. That date is close, and the campaign rules are more complicated than the headline suggests. This guide separates the permanent account features from temporary promotions and explains the fees, onboarding, cards, cheques, international transfers and alternatives.
FAB review: quick verdict for expats
| Best for | UAE residents earning AED 10,000+ who want a traditional bank without a current-account balance fee |
|---|---|
| Main everyday account | FAB One Current Account |
| Minimum salary | AED 10,000 per month for salaried FAB One applicants |
| Non-salaried route | AED 10,000 minimum initial deposit |
| Monthly balance fee | No minimum-balance charge on FAB One; other personal accounts can require AED 3,000 |
| Digital onboarding | Available through FAB Mobile using Emirates ID verification |
| Cheque book | First cheque book free under the general July 2026 price guide |
| Savings highlight | iSave campaign rate of 4% p.a. on qualifying new funds until 31 August 2026 |
| Main drawback | Standard fees and international transaction costs require attention |
| Overall verdict | A strong full-service UAE bank, especially for FAB One customers |
Bottom line: FAB One is more competitive than many standard UAE current accounts because it removes the usual minimum-average-balance charge. FAB is a good option if you meet the AED 10,000 salary rule, value branches and cheques, and want a conventional bank with modern mobile access. It is less compelling for lower-income residents or frequent international spenders seeking the lowest possible FX costs.

What is First Abu Dhabi Bank?
First Abu Dhabi Bank, usually shortened to FAB, is a major UAE banking group headquartered in Abu Dhabi. It provides personal, business, corporate, investment and private banking services. FAB is regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE and has a substantial domestic branch and ATM presence.
For expats, the practical benefit is that FAB can serve as a primary local bank rather than merely a payment app. Customers can receive a salary to a UAE IBAN, obtain a debit card, make local and international transfers, order cheque books, use cash services and potentially add credit, loans or investments later.
A full-service account remains useful in Dubai even as digital banking improves. Employers normally pay salary into a local account, landlords may request post-dated rent cheques and large transactions can trigger document checks that are easier to resolve with an established bank. If this is your first UAE account, read the complete guide to opening a bank account in Dubai before choosing a product.
FAB pros and cons for expats
Advantages
- No minimum-balance charge on FAB One: a valuable difference from many conventional current accounts.
- Established UAE bank: customers get branches, ATMs and a broad product range alongside mobile banking.
- Digital account opening: new customers can apply through FAB Mobile using Emirates ID and identity verification.
- Free Platinum debit card: the FAB One Account includes a Platinum Mastercard debit card.
- Useful ATM allowance: FAB One includes four free monthly cash withdrawals from other UAE ATMs.
- Cheque-book access: useful for residents paying rent with post-dated cheques.
- Rewards: FAB One earns FAB Rewards on eligible debit spending and qualifying average balances.
- Flexible applicant routes: salaried and non-salaried residents can qualify for FAB One through different criteria.
- iSave has no minimum balance: the online savings account allows unrestricted withdrawals.
Disadvantages
- AED 10,000 salary threshold: FAB One is less accessible than some competitor salary accounts.
- Other accounts can carry a balance fee: the general personal account guide lists AED 3,000 minimum balance and AED 26.25 monthly fee when breached.
- International card fee: the debit-card processing charge is 2.1% plus card-scheme charges.
- International ATM withdrawals cost AED 21: before any fee charged by the overseas ATM operator.
- SWIFT transfers can cost up to AED 52.50: correspondent charges may be added.
- iSave’s 4% campaign is temporary: it is due to end on 31 August 2026 and applies only to qualifying new funds.
- Reward value requires calculation: points should not distract from fees, interest rates or FX costs.
- Some service tasks are app-only: residents who avoid mobile banking may find the digital-first service shift inconvenient.
Which FAB account is best for an expat?
FAB One Current Account
FAB One is the standout everyday account for an employed resident earning at least AED 10,000 per month. The product page states that it has no minimum-balance charge, so you do not have to leave a fixed amount idle merely to avoid a monthly fee. Salaried customers qualify with the minimum monthly salary, while non-salaried customers need an initial deposit of AED 10,000.
The account comes with a free Platinum Mastercard debit card. FAB advertises four free withdrawals per month from any UAE ATM, purchase protection on eligible debit transactions, and up to four complimentary lounge visits each year at selected airports in the Middle East, subject to the card programme’s current rules.
FAB One also participates in FAB Rewards. The bank publishes 40 FAB Rewards for every AED 100 of eligible domestic or international debit-card spending. Customers can also earn six rewards for every AED 1,000 of average account balance, up to the programme limit, but this balance-based earning requires a minimum monthly average of AED 10,000.
The rewards are a secondary benefit. The account’s core attraction is simpler: a conventional current account with no minimum-balance charge once you qualify at application.
FAB Personal Savings Account
The Personal Savings Account is available in AED and selected major currencies. It pays interest at the bank’s prevailing rates and includes a debit card. FAB lists a minimum monthly balance requirement of AED 3,000 or equivalent. Under the July 2026 general price guide, falling below the minimum can result in a monthly charge of AED 26.25.
Eligibility is broader than FAB One. FAB says salaried, self-employed and non-salaried customers aged 18 or over can apply, including UAE nationals, GCC nationals, resident expats and certain non-residents. Features vary for non-residents, so confirm whether a debit card, cheques and digital onboarding are available in your specific case.
FAB iSave Account
iSave is an online AED savings account for UAE residents with a valid Emirates ID. It has no minimum-balance requirement and no restriction on the number of withdrawals. Existing FAB customers can open it instantly through FAB Mobile or Online Banking.
The current campaign advertises 4% p.a. on qualifying new funds until 31 August 2026. The treatment of existing balances is different, and the campaign uses a historical base-balance calculation. The full rules are explained later in this review.
Payit Universal Account
In May 2026, FAB launched the Payit Universal Account under the Central Bank’s financial-inclusion framework. It targets UAE residents who may not qualify for traditional products, including people earning up to AED 5,000. It has no minimum-balance requirement and supports digital onboarding, transfers, bills, purchases and cash access through FAB ATMs.
This can be useful for essential payments, but it should not be confused with FAB One. Compare card, cheque, transfer and lending features before relying on it as a full replacement for a conventional salary account.
FAB eligibility and documents
FAB One eligibility
- Resident of the UAE
- Minimum monthly salary of AED 10,000 for salaried applicants
- Or minimum initial deposit of AED 10,000 for non-salaried applicants
- Completed account-opening information
- Valid identity and residency documents
- Proof of income when required
Documents to prepare
- Valid passport
- UAE residence visa or digital residency evidence
- Valid Emirates ID
- UAE mobile number and email address
- Salary certificate, employment contract or recent salary evidence
- Proof of address if requested
- Source-of-funds evidence for a significant opening deposit
FAB’s mobile onboarding promotes opening an account with an Emirates ID, but this does not remove the bank’s compliance obligations. FAB can request a passport, visa, income evidence or additional documents on a case-by-case basis. Ensure that names and dates match across every document.
A newcomer normally needs to complete the resident identification process before opening the full account. See how to obtain an Emirates ID in Dubai if yours is still pending.
How to open a FAB account through the app
- Download FAB Mobile from the official Apple App Store or Google Play listing.
- Select the option to open an account as a new customer.
- Choose the account that matches your salary, balance and banking needs.
- Verify your Emirates ID through the app.
- Complete the video-selfie or liveness security check.
- Provide personal, employment, income and tax-residency information accurately.
- Upload any additional passport, visa or salary documents requested.
- Review the Key Facts Statement and Service & Price Guide.
- Submit the application and wait for approval.
- Activate the debit card, notifications and transaction controls after opening.
FAB says accounts can be opened in minutes, but that refers to eligible straightforward applications. Manual identity or source-of-funds review may extend the process. Keep an existing payment method available until the account, card and salary transfer have all worked successfully.
Security registration
FAB Mobile uses an Emirates ID and video selfie when registering. The liveness check helps prevent someone from using a static photograph or recording to impersonate the customer. Online-banking transactions are approved through the trusted mobile app, and notifications must remain enabled for certain approvals.
You can register FAB Mobile on up to three devices. If a phone is lost, contact FAB immediately and remove or block the device. Use card controls to disable international, online or ATM transactions you do not currently need.
FAB account fees and charges
FAB One specifically advertises no minimum-balance charge. The general July 2026 personal banking guide nevertheless lists an AED 3,000 minimum balance and an AED 26.25 monthly fee when breached for applicable personal accounts. This is why the exact product name matters: do not assume every FAB account has FAB One’s waiver.
| Service | Published maximum or standard charge |
|---|---|
| Account opening | Free |
| Applicable minimum balance | AED 3,000 |
| Fall-below fee on applicable accounts | AED 26.25 per month |
| Account closure within six months | AED 105 |
| UAE AED transfer | AED 0.49 under the fee-guide note |
| Online/mobile foreign-currency transfer | Up to AED 52.50, plus possible correspondent charges |
| Incoming foreign-currency transfer | AED 25 or equivalent plus VAT |
| First cheque book | Free |
| Additional 10-leaf cheque book | AED 21 |
| Additional 25-leaf cheque book | AED 26.25 |
| Returned cheque drawn on account | AED 105 |
| Stop-payment instruction | AED 52.50 per cheque |
| Replacement lost/stolen debit card | AED 26.25 |
| Non-FAB UAE ATM | AED 2.10 after any account allowance |
| Non-FAB GCC ATM | AED 6.30 |
| International ATM | AED 21 |
| Debit-card international transaction | 2.1% plus card-scheme charges |
FAB One’s four free monthly withdrawals from other UAE ATMs override the normal fee for the included allowance. After those free transactions, the standard AED 2.10 charge may apply. Always check the current product-specific Key Facts Statement because the general price guide lists maximum or standard charges across several products.
Cheque costs and rent
The first cheque book is free under FAB’s current general price guide. Additional books cost AED 21 for ten leaves or AED 26.25 for 25 leaves. A returned cheque drawn on your account costs AED 105, and stopping a cheque costs AED 52.50.
Cheques remain important for many Dubai tenancies. Track every post-dated cheque and keep enough money in the account before its due date. The banking charge is only one consequence of a returned rent cheque; it can also create a legal dispute with the landlord. The guide to renting an apartment in Dubai explains the full payment structure.
FAB iSave: is the 4% rate worth it?
FAB iSave currently pays a campaign rate of 4% p.a. on eligible new funds deposited between 1 May 2023 and 31 August 2026. The account has no minimum balance and no withdrawal-frequency restriction, which makes it more flexible than savings products that cancel interest after too many withdrawals.
However, the campaign expires less than a month after this review’s August 2026 update. Do not open the account on the assumption that 4% will continue. Check the FAB page for an extension or replacement rate immediately before moving money.
What counts as new funds?
The campaign applies to fresh money above a historical FAB customer-level base balance. FAB states that the customer’s overall balance on 30 April 2023 is used as the base for the 4% calculation. Existing money is subject to prevailing interest rates rather than automatically receiving the promotional rate.
Eligibility uses average monthly balance. FAB also states that a differential campaign-interest amount greater than AED 100 for the July and August 2026 extension months may be applied within 45 days after the extension ends. That timing means the full promotional amount may not appear as ordinary monthly interest immediately.
Prevailing rates
Outside the campaign treatment, FAB publishes tiered ranges rather than a single 4% figure. At the time of review, balances below AED 500,000 show rates up to 2.465%; AED 500,000 to AED 5 million shows a range from 2.465% to 3.251%; and larger balances can receive 3.251% or lower depending on the band calculation.
Because the promotional rate is temporary and based on new funds, compare iSave with Mashreq NEO PLUS Saver, Wio and ADCB Super Saver using your exact salary, balance and expected withdrawals. A slightly lower unconditional rate can be better than a higher rate for which only part of your cash qualifies.
FAB Mobile, debit cards and Rewards
Mobile banking
FAB Mobile handles account opening, transfers, cards, bill payments, statements, profile updates and many service requests. Recent features include spending and cash-flow insights, categorised transaction history, real-time alerts, card transaction controls and the ability to reduce a credit-card limit.
From October 2025, FAB moved a number of service tasks exclusively to the app, including certain profile updates, document uploads, own-account transfers and e-statements. This improves convenience for mobile users but makes the app essential rather than optional.
FAB One debit card
The included Platinum Mastercard has a published daily ATM withdrawal limit of AED 20,000 and retail purchase limit of AED 40,000. These are high maximums, so consider reducing limits in the app if your daily needs are much lower.
The card includes selected purchase-protection and airport-lounge features, subject to Mastercard programme rules. Lounge access is advertised up to four times per year at selected Middle East airports. Check whether a qualifying international transaction or registration is required before travelling.
FAB Rewards
FAB One earns 40 FAB Rewards for each AED 100 of eligible domestic or international debit spending. Balance rewards are earned at six points per AED 1,000 of average balance, with a minimum AED 10,000 average balance and monthly programme cap.
Rewards can be used for options such as cashback, bills, shopping, dining or travel. The real value depends on the redemption rate. Calculate how many dirhams your likely monthly points are worth before keeping extra cash in a low-interest current account merely to earn rewards.
Local transfers, international transfers and cash access
UAE transfers
The July 2026 fee guide lists an AED 1.05 line for local AED transfers but notes that the charge was revised to AED 0.49 from January 2024. App screens and the current Key Facts Statement should show the charge before confirmation. Own-account and internal FAB transfers may be free depending on the transaction type.
International transfers
Foreign-currency transfers made through online or mobile banking can cost up to AED 52.50. Correspondent banks may add charges, and an incoming foreign-currency transfer can cost AED 25 or equivalent plus VAT. Choosing an instruction where you cover all charges can add AED 105 under the guide.
The visible fee is only one part of the cost. Compare FAB’s live exchange rate, the exact amount the recipient receives, the expected arrival time and all third-party deductions. A regulated specialist transfer provider can be cheaper for some currencies, while FAB may be more convenient for others.
International card use
FAB lists a debit-card international transaction processing fee of 2.1% plus the standard Visa or Mastercard scheme charge. International ATM withdrawals cost AED 21 from FAB, before any surcharge imposed by the machine owner. For frequent travel, a separate low-FX card may be more economical.
When an overseas terminal or ATM offers to convert the transaction into AED, review the exchange rate carefully. Dynamic currency conversion is often worse than allowing the card network to process the local currency amount.
Branches, customer support and security
FAB provides a branch and ATM network as well as phone and digital support. That makes it more suitable than an app-only provider for customers who occasionally need cash services, identity checks or more complex banking help. Service experience can still vary by case and channel.
The mobile app uses a registered device, Emirates ID, video-selfie verification and in-app transaction approval. Customers can control card channels, set travel notices and block or replace a card. If suspicious activity occurs, FAB provides a 24-hour contact centre and app controls.
Never disclose a full PIN or one-time password to an unsolicited caller. Approve only transactions you initiated, keep the registered mobile number active and update expired Emirates ID, visa and passport records promptly.
FAB vs Emirates NBD, ADCB, Mashreq NEO and Wio
| Bank | Best fit | Main advantage | Main watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|
| FAB | Residents earning AED 10,000+ wanting full-service banking | FAB One has no minimum-balance charge | International fees and temporary iSave rate |
| Emirates NBD | Residents prioritising network size and broad daily banking | Large branch/ATM presence and mature app | Product-specific balance and salary rules |
| ADCB | Salary customers wanting Hayyak onboarding and relationship banking | AED 5,000 current-account entry threshold | Aspire relationship pricing |
| Mashreq NEO | Digital users earning AED 10,000+ or holding AED 50,000+ | NEO PLUS fees and high-yield Saver | Standard NEO is less competitive |
| Wio Personal | App-first customers focused on savings and money organisation | Strong digital experience | Less traditional branch support |
FAB One compares well with conventional salary accounts because it removes the typical minimum-balance charge. Emirates NBD can be preferable when branch and ATM density is the top priority; read the Emirates NBD review for a firsthand account of its daily use.
Mashreq NEO PLUS and Wio can be stronger for savings, especially after FAB’s current iSave campaign ends. ADCB has a lower entry salary for its standard current account but uses relationship tiers that can create monthly fees. Use the full Dubai banks comparison for expats to match each option to your salary and balance.
Who should choose FAB?
FAB is a strong choice if you:
- are a UAE resident earning at least AED 10,000 per month;
- want a current account without a minimum-balance charge;
- need cheque-book access for rent;
- want branches and ATMs as well as modern mobile banking;
- value four free monthly withdrawals from other UAE ATMs;
- can make practical use of the Platinum debit-card benefits;
- want to keep everyday banking, credit and possible future lending with one institution.
Consider another option if you:
- earn less than AED 10,000 and do not have the non-salaried opening deposit;
- want a permanently high savings rate rather than a campaign ending soon;
- make frequent foreign-currency card payments or overseas ATM withdrawals;
- want a purely digital experience with advanced savings pots;
- do not need a full-service bank and qualify for a simpler zero-balance account;
- prefer rewards with a clearly published cash value over a points ecosystem.
The most sensible setup for a qualifying customer is to use FAB One for salary, bills, card spending and cheques, while keeping surplus cash in whichever savings product offers the best confirmed net return. Do not leave a large balance in the current account solely for points unless the reward value beats the interest available elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions
Is FAB a good bank for expats?
Yes. FAB is a strong full-service bank for UAE residents who want salary banking, branches, ATMs, cheques and a mobile app. FAB One is particularly competitive for customers earning at least AED 10,000 because it has no minimum-balance charge.
What is the minimum salary for FAB?
FAB One requires a minimum monthly salary of AED 10,000 for salaried applicants. Non-salaried residents can qualify with an initial deposit of AED 10,000. Other FAB products have different eligibility rules.
Does FAB One have a minimum balance?
FAB advertises no minimum-balance charges on the FAB One Account. This is product-specific. The general personal banking price guide lists an AED 3,000 minimum and AED 26.25 fall-below fee for applicable accounts.
Can I open a FAB account online?
Eligible customers can open an account through FAB Mobile. New customers verify their Emirates ID and complete a video-selfie security check. FAB may request passport, visa, salary or source-of-funds documents.
Can a non-resident open a FAB account?
FAB lists its Personal Savings Account as available to certain non-residents, subject to documentation and approval. FAB One is specifically for UAE residents. Non-resident features can be more limited, so confirm the current terms directly.
Does FAB provide a cheque book?
Yes. FAB’s July 2026 general price guide lists the first cheque book as free. Additional books cost AED 21 for ten leaves or AED 26.25 for 25 leaves. Eligibility depends on the account type.
What is FAB iSave?
iSave is an online AED savings account for UAE residents. It has no minimum balance and no withdrawal-frequency restriction. The current campaign pays 4% p.a. on qualifying new funds until 31 August 2026.
Will all my iSave money earn 4%?
Not necessarily. The promotional rate applies to qualifying new funds above FAB’s historical customer-level base balance. Existing funds receive prevailing rates, and the campaign is due to end on 31 August 2026.
How much does FAB charge for an international transfer?
FAB’s July 2026 guide lists up to AED 52.50 for foreign-currency transfers through online or mobile banking. Correspondent-bank charges, beneficiary deductions and exchange-rate costs can apply in addition.
How much does an international ATM withdrawal cost?
FAB lists AED 21 for an international non-FAB ATM withdrawal, before any fee charged by the overseas ATM operator. GCC withdrawals are listed at AED 6.30.
Is FAB better than Emirates NBD?
FAB One is attractive for its lack of a minimum-balance charge, while Emirates NBD may be more convenient for customers prioritising network scale. Compare salary eligibility, branches near you, fees, savings and international use.
Is FAB safe?
FAB is regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE. Its mobile security includes Emirates ID verification, a video-selfie liveness check, trusted-device approval and card controls. Customers must still protect credentials and report suspicious activity immediately.
Final FAB review verdict
First Abu Dhabi Bank deserves a place on an expat’s shortlist. FAB One combines the reliability of a major traditional UAE bank with digital opening, no minimum-balance charge, a Platinum debit card, cheques and a useful allowance for non-FAB ATM withdrawals. For a professional earning AED 10,000 or more, it is a credible primary salary account.
The weaker points are international transaction costs and the temporary nature of the current iSave promotion. The 4% campaign is appealing but expires on 31 August 2026 unless FAB extends it, and it applies only to qualifying new funds. Review the live terms rather than treating it as a permanent product rate.
If your priority is full-service everyday banking and you meet FAB One’s eligibility, FAB is easy to recommend. If your salary is lower, you travel frequently or you primarily want the highest flexible savings return, compare ADCB, Mashreq NEO, Wio and Emirates NBD before deciding.
