This Dubai Islamic Bank review examines whether DIB is a good bank for expats living in Dubai. DIB is the UAE’s largest Islamic bank and provides the everyday services most residents expect: salary accounts, current and savings accounts, debit cards, cheque books, branches, ATMs, local and international transfers, cards and Sharia-compliant financing.
The standard Al Islami Current Account has a straightforward AED 3,000 opening-balance requirement and includes a debit card, digital banking, six free monthly teller transactions and a free first cheque book. New salary customers earning at least AED 8,000 may instead qualify for DIB XTRA, which currently advertises a monthly maintenance-fee waiver, free online international transfers and additional salary benefits.
DIB’s savings campaign is especially visible in August 2026, advertising expected profit of up to 6.60% p.a. for eligible new salary-transfer customers and up to 5.10% for other eligible customers. However, this campaign ends on 31 August 2026, requires at least AED 50,000 of qualifying incremental funds and does not apply to money merely moved from another existing DIB account.
Dubai Islamic Bank review: quick verdict
| Best for | Residents wanting a full-service Sharia-compliant UAE bank |
|---|---|
| Standard account | Al Islami Current Account |
| Opening balance | AED 3,000 |
| Salary-account threshold | AED 8,000 for the current DIB XTRA employer package |
| Digital banking | DIB alt mobile, online, WhatsApp and self-service channels |
| Cheque book | First cheque book free; AED 26.25 for an additional 25-leaf book |
| Savings highlight | Up to 6.60% expected profit during the campaign ending 31 August 2026 |
| Main drawback | Ordinary savings profit can be lost after more than one monthly withdrawal |
| Overall verdict | A strong local bank when Islamic banking is important to you |
Bottom line: DIB is a credible primary bank for expats who want Sharia-compliant banking without giving up practical UAE features. Its current account is easy to understand, DIB XTRA can be competitive for qualifying salaries and the branch/digital combination is useful. Compare carefully if your priorities are frequent savings withdrawals, international FX or permanently high deposit returns.

What is Dubai Islamic Bank?
Dubai Islamic Bank, commonly called DIB, is a UAE bank founded around the principle of Sharia-compliant finance. DIB describes itself as the largest Islamic bank in the UAE and operates a broad consumer, business and corporate banking franchise. It is licensed and regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE.
For an expat, DIB works like a complete local bank in practical terms. You can receive salary to an AED IBAN, pay bills, use a debit card, withdraw cash, make transfers, order a cheque book and apply for eligible financing. The distinction lies in the contractual structures used for deposits and financing rather than in the absence of normal banking functionality.
DIB has physical branches and cash machines alongside its alt digital platform. That makes it a realistic primary bank rather than only a specialist savings provider. If you are unfamiliar with UAE requirements, first read how to open a bank account in Dubai.
How is Islamic banking different?
Islamic banking avoids conventional interest, known as riba, and uses Sharia-compliant contracts approved by a bank’s Sharia governance framework. Instead of describing savings returns as guaranteed interest, DIB refers to expected profit generated through an approved investment arrangement.
A current account is designed mainly to hold money safely and execute payments. A savings or investment deposit may use a structure such as Wakala, where the bank acts as an investment agent under agreed terms. DIB publishes expected rather than guaranteed profit rates, and actual treatment follows the product contract.
Islamic financing also uses different structures from a conventional interest-bearing loan. Depending on the product, the bank can use sale, lease or partnership arrangements and disclose a profit rate. This does not mean financing is free or necessarily cheaper. Compare the total amount payable, fees, early-settlement rules and insurance or Takaful costs.
Can non-Muslims use DIB?
Yes. DIB serves eligible customers regardless of religion. Many expats choose it for salary banking, a convenient branch, a campaign rate or a specific home-finance product. You do not have to be Muslim to open a Sharia-compliant account.
DIB pros and cons for expats
Advantages
- Fully Sharia-compliant: suitable for customers who want their banking structured according to Islamic principles.
- Complete local banking: accounts, cards, cheques, transfers, branches and financing are available within one institution.
- Accessible current account: the Al Islami Current Account requires an AED 3,000 opening balance rather than a high salary threshold.
- DIB XTRA salary package: eligible new salary customers earning AED 8,000+ receive a maintenance-fee waiver and other benefits.
- Free first cheque book: helpful for rent payments.
- Digital onboarding: new customers can open eligible accounts through DIB alt mobile.
- Broad digital service: alt provides more than 135 services across mobile, online, WhatsApp and self-service channels.
- Savings campaigns: DIB periodically offers attractive expected-profit promotions on fresh funds.
- Islamic financing range: personal, auto and home-finance products are available to eligible residents.
Disadvantages
- Opening balance: the standard current account requires AED 3,000.
- Savings withdrawal limits: ordinary Al Islami Savings profit is not paid for a month with more than one withdrawal.
- 2-in-1 conditions: profit requires at least AED 10,000 and no more than two monthly withdrawals.
- Promotional rate expires soon: the 6.60% campaign ends on 31 August 2026 unless extended.
- Headline profit is conditional: qualifying incremental funds and salary rules apply.
- International transfers require full-cost comparison: free bank fees do not remove FX spreads or correspondent charges.
- Expected profit is not guaranteed interest: customers must understand the underlying product terms.
- Premium segments have balance requirements: relationship labels are useful only if their benefits justify the assets held.
Dubai Islamic Bank account options
Al Islami Current Account
The Al Islami Current Account is the standard choice for everyday resident banking. DIB publishes an opening-balance requirement of AED 3,000. Customers receive a debit card and access to mobile banking, online banking, electronic statements and bill payments.
The account can pay Etisalat, du, DEWA, SEWA, FEWA, ADDC, Emicool, RTA and selected other service providers. This covers many of the recurring payments a new resident needs after moving into an apartment.
The first six teller transactions each month are free. Further teller transactions cost AED 10.50 each. The first cheque book is free, while each additional 25-leaf book costs AED 26.25. Those limits encourage customers to use digital banking for routine transactions.
Al Islami Savings Account
The standard Savings Account earns an expected profit announced quarterly. Profit is calculated using the average monthly balance, but no profit is paid for a month if the minimum balance at any point drops below AED 1,000.
The more important restriction is withdrawals. If you make more than one withdrawal transaction during the month across teller and electronic channels, the account is treated like a current account for that month and does not participate in generated profit.
This makes it suitable for money you rarely touch, but unsuitable as a high-activity spending account. Keep everyday payments in the current account and transfer only stable savings to the savings account.
Al Islami E-Savings Account
E-Savings is available to existing DIB customers and can be opened online. It requires an initial investment of AED 1,000 and pays expected profit announced quarterly based on average monthly balance. Review the current Key Facts Statement for transaction limits and rates before opening.
Al Islami 2-in-1 Account
The 2-in-1 Account combines current-account payment access with expected-profit participation. No profit is paid for a month if the balance drops below AED 10,000 on any day or if more than two withdrawals occur during the month.
This can work for a customer who wants cheque and payment access while leaving a stable amount untouched. It is a poor fit if your balance regularly falls below AED 10,000 before salary day or you make frequent direct withdrawals.
Mumayyaz Privilege Banking
Mumayyaz targets customers with a monthly salary transfer from AED 15,000 to AED 35,000 or Personal Financial Standing of AED 100,000 to AED 350,000. The relationship measure includes qualifying current, savings and time-deposit balances as well as certain outstanding finance.
Benefits include enhanced service and access to selected Wakala deposits. Compare the specific benefits with the ordinary account rather than moving assets simply for the segment label.
DIB XTRA Salary Account
DIB XTRA is the salary proposition for eligible new salary-transfer customers. The current employer-package page lists a minimum monthly salary of AED 8,000. Benefits include a guaranteed joining bonus of up to AED 1,500 and a chance for selected winners to receive one month’s salary back, capped at AED 10,000.
Current advertised benefits
- Monthly account-maintenance-fee waiver
- Free first debit card
- Free first cheque book
- Six free teller transactions each month
- Free online international transfers
- 12 months of TravellerPass access
- Joining bonus subject to salary band and campaign terms
“New salary transfer” matters. Promotions generally exclude customers who already transferred salary to DIB during a stated lookback period. The employer may also need to be eligible for a specific package. Confirm the offer directly before moving your payroll.
A free online transfer refers to DIB’s transaction fee. The receiving bank, correspondent bank and currency conversion can still create costs. Compare the exact delivered amount, not only the visible fee.
DIB savings campaign: is 6.60% really available?
DIB’s Bigger Earnings campaign runs from 1 June to 31 August 2026. It offers eligible new salary-transfer customers expected profit of up to 6.60% p.a. Other eligible individual customers can earn up to 5.10% p.a.
The maximum is not automatically paid on every dirham. Customers must open a new Al Islami Savings Account in AED or USD during the campaign and maintain a minimum average incremental balance of AED 50,000 or USD equivalent. The bonus applies to qualifying balance growth up to AED 4 million.
Key campaign conditions
- Account must be newly opened during the campaign period.
- Minimum qualifying incremental average balance is AED 50,000 or USD equivalent.
- New salary-transfer customers need a monthly salary of at least AED 10,000 for the highest expected rate.
- A new salary customer must not have transferred salary to DIB during the six months before the campaign start.
- Funds transferred from existing DIB current, savings or deposit balances do not count as fresh funds.
- Bonus profit applies only during the campaign period.
- After the campaign, the account returns to DIB’s standard quarterly published expected-profit treatment.
- The bonus is discretionary and governed by the campaign terms.
At the August 2026 update date, less than one month remains. Moving money solely for a short campaign may produce a much smaller cash benefit than the annualised percentage suggests. Calculate the actual days eligible.
Example
DIB’s own example shows AED 50,000 of qualifying incremental balance maintained for 61 days at 6.60%. The simple campaign-period calculation is approximately AED 551.51. That is useful, but it is not AED 3,300 unless the rate and balance were maintained for a full year—which the current campaign does not offer.
Wakala deposits
DIB also offers Wakala term deposits. Its published USD Wakala rates at the time of review range from 3.60% expected profit for one month to 3.95% for 12 months. Rates can change, funds may be less accessible and the contract follows Sharia principles applicable to Wakala investment.
Compare deposits on matching currency, term, liquidity and risk. A USD expected-profit rate should not be compared directly with an AED account without considering why you hold USD and the AED/USD peg.
How to open a DIB account
Documents to prepare
- Valid passport
- UAE residence visa or digital residency record
- Valid Emirates ID
- UAE mobile number and email address
- Salary certificate or income evidence for salary products
- Proof of address if requested
- Source-of-funds evidence for significant deposits
- Tax-residency information
DIB advertises opening eligible accounts in minutes through the alt mobile app. The app can use UAE PASS for secure access, but first-time users still complete account onboarding and identity checks. The bank can request additional documents before final approval.
Your application is normally easier after your residency is active. See the guides to the Dubai residence visa and obtaining an Emirates ID.
Application steps
- Compare the standard current account, DIB XTRA and savings options.
- Download DIB alt mobile from an official app-store listing.
- Choose the account-opening option.
- Verify your identity and Emirates ID.
- Provide residency, employment and tax information accurately.
- Upload salary or source-of-funds evidence if requested.
- Read the Key Facts Statement, Sharia certificate and charge schedule.
- Fund the account with the required opening amount.
- Activate the debit card and security controls.
- Verify the account is fully active before redirecting salary or issuing cheques.
DIB fees, cheques and transfers
DIB publishes a general consumer Schedule of Charges effective 19 June 2026, plus separate schedules for premium, home-finance and business relationships. Always consult the current PDF for charges not stated on the product page.
Clearly published current-account charges
| Service | Published charge or condition |
|---|---|
| Al Islami Current Account opening balance | AED 3,000 |
| First six monthly teller transactions | Free |
| Additional teller transaction | AED 10.50 |
| First cheque book | Free |
| Additional 25-leaf cheque book | AED 26.25 |
| DIB XTRA monthly maintenance | Waived for eligible salary customers |
| DIB XTRA online international transfer | DIB fee waived under package benefits |
| Savings minimum for monthly profit | AED 1,000 throughout the month |
| 2-in-1 minimum for monthly profit | AED 10,000 throughout the month |
Charges for local transfers, international remittances, debit-card replacement, overseas ATMs, returned cheques and account closure should be confirmed in the June 2026 schedule before using those services. The fee shown in alt at transaction confirmation is the practical final check.
Cheque books and rent
DIB’s free first cheque book makes the current account practical for Dubai rent. Additional books cost AED 26.25 for 25 leaves. Confirm the cheque-book request is approved and delivered before promising a landlord a payment schedule.
Keep enough money available for every post-dated cheque. A returned cheque can lead to bank charges and a rental dispute. The guide to renting an apartment in Dubai explains cheques, deposits, Ejari and agency costs.
Local transfers and Aani
DIB supports domestic transfers and states that eligible transfers up to AED 50,000 can be processed instantly. Customers can register for Aani through alt mobile or online and use a mobile number, email or QR code for instant payments without sharing an IBAN.
International transfers and exchange rates
International transfer value depends on the DIB fee, exchange-rate spread and any correspondent or receiving-bank deductions. Even when DIB XTRA waives its online transfer fee, the recipient may receive less than the sent equivalent.
DIB publishes indicative currency buying and selling rates. Compare a live quote with another regulated provider and focus on the exact foreign-currency amount delivered. A “free transfer” can be expensive when the exchange spread is wide.
DIB alt app and daily banking
DIB alt is the umbrella for the bank’s digital channels rather than a separate bank. It includes mobile banking, online banking, WhatsApp banking, phone banking, ATMs and other self-service functions. DIB says the platform provides more than 135 digital services.
Customers can open accounts, transfer money, pay bills, manage cards, apply for eligible financing and access statements. UAE PASS can be used as a secure login option after registration. DIB alt on WhatsApp uses the registered mobile number and one-time-password verification.
Security practices
- Download only the official DIB alt app.
- Keep the registered UAE mobile number active.
- Never disclose an OTP, PIN or password to an unsolicited caller.
- Approve only transactions you initiated.
- Review alerts immediately and report unknown transactions.
- Update passport, visa and Emirates ID documents before expiry.
- Use UAE PASS only through official prompts and applications.
Branches and cash services
DIB combines alt with a UAE branch and ATM network. That is useful for cash deposits, identity updates, cheque issues or financing discussions. The six-free-teller limit means routine banking is cheaper through digital channels.
Cards, rewards and financing
DIB issues debit cards with eligible accounts and offers Sharia-compliant covered cards. Covered cards can provide cashback, Skywards miles, lounge access and other benefits, but fees and minimum spending vary. A card marketed as “free for life” may require annual spending to waive later fees.
Wala’a Rewards can be earned through qualifying salary transfers, account balances, deposits and card activity. DIB publishes different earning bands—for example, first salary transfer rewards increase with salary, and current/savings balance rewards begin at a substantial average balance.
Calculate the cash value before holding extra funds purely for points. Expected profit or another bank’s savings return can be more valuable.
DIB also offers personal, auto and home finance using Islamic structures. Approval depends on salary, employer, debt-burden ratio, age and credit history. Compare the total repayment or sale price, processing fees, Takaful, early settlement and late-payment charity provisions—not only the advertised profit rate.
DIB vs Emirates NBD, ADCB, Mashreq NEO and other banks
| Bank | Best fit | Main advantage | Main watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIB | Customers wanting full-service Islamic banking | Sharia-compliant accounts, cards and financing | Savings withdrawal limits and campaign conditions |
| Emirates NBD | Residents prioritising a large UAE network | Branches, ATMs and broad conventional banking | Account-specific salary and balance requirements |
| ADCB | Salary customers wanting an established local bank | AED 5,000 current-account entry threshold | Aspire relationship pricing |
| Mashreq NEO | Digital users earning AED 10,000+ or holding AED 50,000+ | NEO PLUS Saver and fee waivers | Standard NEO less competitive |
| FAB | AED 10,000+ earners wanting full-service banking | FAB One has no minimum-balance charge | International transaction costs |
| Wio Personal | App-first savers | Modern digital experience | Less traditional branch support |
DIB’s unique decision factor is Sharia compliance. If that is essential, compare DIB with other Islamic propositions such as Emirates Islamic and ADCB Islamic. If it is not essential, compare costs and functionality across the whole market.
Emirates NBD has a particularly large local network; the Emirates NBD review covers firsthand salary and rent-cheque use. Mashreq NEO PLUS and Wio may provide more flexible digital saving, while DIB’s standard savings account penalises frequent withdrawals by removing monthly profit.
Use the complete Dubai bank comparison for expats to match each account to your salary, balance, rent and transfer habits.
Who should choose Dubai Islamic Bank?
DIB is a strong choice if you:
- want Sharia-compliant everyday banking;
- need a current account, debit card and cheque book;
- can provide the AED 3,000 current-account opening balance;
- earn AED 8,000+ and qualify as a new DIB XTRA salary customer;
- value a local branch network alongside digital banking;
- want Islamic personal, auto or home-finance options;
- can leave savings relatively untouched to remain profit-eligible.
Consider another bank if you:
- want a zero-opening-balance everyday account;
- make frequent withdrawals from savings;
- want an unconditional high savings rate;
- mainly need low-cost multi-currency travel banking;
- do not qualify for DIB XTRA and find another salary package cheaper;
- want the simplest possible digital-only experience;
- are attracted only by the short campaign ending 31 August 2026.
A sensible setup is to use the DIB current or XTRA account for salary, cheques, bills and ordinary transactions, while keeping long-term money in a separate savings or Wakala product only after understanding the access restrictions. Do not mix daily spending with savings that lose profit after one or two withdrawals.

Frequently asked questions
Is Dubai Islamic Bank good for expats?
Yes. DIB is a strong option for residents wanting Sharia-compliant salary banking, a debit card, cheque book, branches and digital access. Compare savings restrictions and transfer costs with alternatives.
Can non-Muslims open a DIB account?
Yes. Eligible customers can use DIB regardless of religion. The products follow Islamic banking principles, but they are not restricted to Muslims.
How much do I need to open a DIB current account?
The Al Islami Current Account requires an opening balance of AED 3,000. DIB XTRA uses salary-transfer eligibility and currently lists a minimum monthly salary of AED 8,000 for new salary customers.
What is the minimum salary for DIB XTRA?
DIB’s current employer-package page lists AED 8,000 per month. The package is for new salary-transfer customers and can depend on employer and campaign eligibility.
Can I open DIB online?
Eligible new customers can apply through DIB alt mobile. Identity, Emirates ID, residency and compliance checks still apply, and DIB may request additional documentation.
Does DIB provide a cheque book?
Yes. The first cheque book for the Al Islami Current Account is free. Additional 25-leaf books cost AED 26.25 under the current product page.
What is an expected profit rate?
It is the anticipated return from a Sharia-compliant deposit or investment arrangement. It is not described as conventional guaranteed interest. Actual treatment follows the product contract and DIB’s announced profit.
Does DIB pay 6.60% on savings?
Only eligible new salary-transfer customers under the campaign ending 31 August 2026 can receive up to 6.60% expected profit. They need at least AED 10,000 salary and AED 50,000 qualifying incremental average balance in a newly opened Savings Account.

Eligible DIB XTRA customers receive free online international transfers under the package. Currency conversion, correspondent-bank and receiving-bank charges can still apply.

DIB is stronger when Sharia compliance is essential. Emirates NBD may offer a larger conventional banking network and different savings options. Compare the exact account, salary condition, app, branch location and transfer habits.
Is Dubai Islamic Bank safe?
DIB is licensed and regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE. Customers should still secure their alt login, protect OTPs and report suspicious activity immediately.
Final Dubai Islamic Bank review verdict
Dubai Islamic Bank is a strong all-round choice for an expat who wants Sharia-compliant banking. The Al Islami Current Account provides the local essentials—AED banking, debit card, cheques, bills and digital access—with a manageable AED 3,000 opening balance. DIB XTRA improves the package for eligible AED 8,000+ salary customers.
The savings products require more care. Expected profit depends on balances and withdrawal behaviour, while the advertised 6.60% maximum is part of a short campaign ending on 31 August 2026. It applies only to qualifying incremental funds and eligible new salary transfers.
If Islamic banking is important and you want an established UAE institution, DIB belongs on your shortlist. If you mainly want unrestricted high-yield savings or low-cost global currency features, compare Wio, Mashreq NEO, HSBC and other banks before deciding.
