A Dubai Islamic Bank salary account can be a practical main account for expats who want Sharia-compliant banking, a cheque book and a full branch network. The important point in 2026 is that DIB’s standard Al Islami Current Account and its DIB XTRA salary-transfer offers are related but not identical. Their salary thresholds, fee waivers and joining rewards must be checked separately.

This guide explains what a DIB salary account actually is, who can open one, the documents expats need, the current published fees, what DIB XTRA adds and what happens if your salary stops. It is intentionally narrower than our full Dubai Islamic Bank review, which compares DIB’s wider account, savings and financing range.
Dubai Islamic Bank salary account: quick facts
| Question | 2026 answer |
|---|---|
| Underlying everyday account | Al Islami Current Account, a Sharia-compliant, non-profit-bearing current account |
| Who can open it? | UAE nationals or legal UAE residents aged 18 or over, subject to DIB approval |
| Opening balance | DIB’s current KFS says the account can be opened with no balance |
| Standard monthly fee | AED 26.25 if the average monthly balance is below AED 3,000, unless another exemption applies |
| DIB XTRA threshold | DIB’s employer-package page states AED 8,000; the separate 2026 XTRA campaign table includes bonus bands from AED 5,000. Confirm which route your employer qualifies for |
| Debit card | First AED debit card is complimentary when requested during account opening |
| Cheque book | First 25-leaf cheque book free; subsequent 25-leaf books AED 26.25 |
| Teller transactions | First six per month free; AED 10.50 each thereafter |
| Investment return | None on the current-account balance |
| Best for | Residents wanting salary, rent cheques and everyday payments with an Islamic bank |
Bottom line: DIB is a credible salary-bank option when you value Sharia compliance, branches and cheque facilities. Do not choose it only for a headline joining bonus. First confirm the exact employer package, the bonus conditions and how the account will be treated if salary credits stop.

What is a Dubai Islamic Bank salary account?
A salary account is an everyday bank account to which your employer sends your monthly pay. At DIB, the underlying product is normally an Al Islami Current Account. It gives you an AED IBAN, debit card access, bill payment, transfers, electronic statements and cheque facilities.
The account is based on Qard Hassan. DIB’s Al Islami Current Account Key Facts Statement describes it as a call-deposit arrangement in which your balance is guaranteed and repayable on demand, but does not earn investment profit. In everyday terms, it is a transactional account—not the place to keep a large long-term savings balance.
Salary transfer can change the commercial package attached to that current account. An eligible employee may receive a maintenance-fee waiver, transfer benefits or a joining reward through DIB XTRA. Those extras are governed by the applicable employer package or campaign terms rather than by the current account alone.
Current account, payroll account and DIB XTRA are not the same thing
- Al Islami Current Account: the individual everyday account governed by its own KFS and standard fee schedule.
- Al Islami Payroll Account: a payroll arrangement built around an employer’s relationship with DIB; the published charge schedule says fees depend on DIB’s employer categorisation and listing criteria.
- DIB XTRA Salary Transfer Account: a salary-transfer proposition for eligible new relationships, with package benefits and conditional joining rewards.
That distinction matters because a web page may advertise “zero balance” or a joining bonus while the underlying standard account documents still explain fall-below fees and general conditions. Ask DIB to identify the exact product and package on your application.
DIB salary account eligibility and minimum salary
DIB’s current-account KFS says a UAE national or legal UAE resident aged over 18 may apply. Opening remains subject to identity, employment, source-of-funds and compliance checks. A residence visa and Emirates ID are therefore central to the normal expat route.
The salary threshold is less simple than a single number:
- DIB’s employer-package page states a minimum monthly salary of AED 8,000 for the DIB XTRA Salary Account offered through that route.
- The separate DIB XTRA campaign page, live when checked on 20 September 2026, publishes joining-bonus bands beginning at AED 5,000 for both UAE nationals and expatriates.
- The standard Al Islami Current Account is not presented as a salary-only product; its KFS focuses on residence, age, documents and the AED 3,000 average-balance rule.
This is not a reason to guess that every customer earning AED 5,000 qualifies for every XTRA benefit. Employer listing, nationality, salary band, new-to-salary status and the products you take can change eligibility. If your salary is between AED 5,000 and AED 7,999, obtain written confirmation of the exact package before switching payroll.
Does your employer need to be listed?
For employer-linked packages, DIB can assess the company as well as the employee. The official Schedule of Charges explicitly says payroll-account charges depend on employer categorisation and listing. A salary above the advertised threshold therefore does not guarantee that every employer receives the same package.
Ask HR whether the company already transfers salaries to DIB, and ask the bank whether your employer is eligible for DIB XTRA. If you have not yet completed residency, follow the practical sequence in our Emirates ID guide before applying.
Documents required for expats
DIB’s Al Islami Current Account KFS lists the following core requirements:
- completed account-opening application;
- FATCA and Common Reporting Standard declarations;
- valid Emirates ID;
- valid passport;
- valid UAE residence visa for expatriates;
- source-of-funds and income evidence, such as a salary certificate, trade licence or other proof of income; and
- proof of physical residential address, such as a utility bill or another accepted document.
The KFS says documents supplied should remain valid for at least 30 days when you apply. For a salary-transfer package, prepare a recent salary certificate or employer letter showing your job title, start date and monthly salary. DIB may request payslips, an employment contract or bank statements depending on the case.
If you have just arrived and do not yet have a utility bill in your name, ask whether your tenancy contract or Ejari is acceptable. Our guides to renting an apartment in Dubai and Ejari registration explain how those documents fit into the relocation sequence.
Everyday benefits of the DIB current account
Debit card and digital banking
You can request an AED debit card during account opening. The first card is complimentary under the KFS. It supports ATM withdrawals, online purchases and point-of-sale payments, subject to the limits for the card type issued.
DIB’s alt channels cover mobile, online, WhatsApp and ATM services. Everyday functions include transfers, statements and bill payments. The official current-account page lists providers such as DEWA, du, Etisalat, RTA and Emaar, which is useful once your housing and utilities are active.
Cheque book for Dubai rent
The first 25-leaf cheque book is free. Additional 25-leaf books cost AED 26.25 under the Schedule of Charges effective in August 2026. This makes the account suitable for landlords who still require post-dated rent cheques.
Never issue a rent cheque until the funds are reserved. The annual rent advertised in a listing is only one part of the cash commitment; use our 2026 Dubai rent guide to budget deposits, agency charges, Ejari and utilities as well.
Branch support
DIB has physical branches as well as digital channels. That is valuable if you need certified letters, a manager’s cheque, complex source-of-funds support or help with a cheque issue. The trade-off is that branch-led services can carry fees and waiting time, so use digital channels for routine tasks.
DIB XTRA salary-transfer benefits and joining bonus
DIB’s employer-package page currently advertises a maintenance-fee waiver, free online international transfers, a free first debit card, a free first cheque book, six free monthly teller transactions and 12 months of TravellerPass for eligible new salary-transfer customers.
The broader DIB XTRA campaign page advertises a joining bonus “up to AED 16,000,” but that headline needs context. The maximum published total is for a UAE national in the highest salary band who also takes several qualifying products. It is not the cash reward for transferring salary alone.
Published 2026 salary-transfer bonus for expatriates
| Monthly salary | Salary-transfer component shown for expats |
|---|---|
| AED 5,000–7,999 | AED 250 |
| AED 8,000–14,999 | AED 500 |
| AED 15,000–34,999 | AED 1,000 |
| AED 35,000–49,999 | AED 2,500 |
| AED 50,000+ | AED 3,000 |
The campaign page says the relationship must be a new salary transfer. Additional bonuses depend on taking new personal finance, auto finance, a covered card or home finance and meeting each product’s conditions. Card rewards also have minimum-spend requirements within 60 days.
Do not borrow money or open an expensive card merely to increase a joining bonus. Compare the total finance cost, annual card fee and required spending with the reward. A bonus is worthwhile only when the underlying product already suits you.
Are international transfers really free?
“Free online international transfer” normally describes the bank’s transaction fee for the eligible package. A currency-conversion margin, correspondent-bank charge or receiving-bank fee can still reduce the final amount. Compare the exact amount received abroad with at least one alternative before sending a large transfer.
Fees, minimum balance and costs to check
The official Schedule of Charges and KFS list these key amounts:
| Service | Published charge |
|---|---|
| Monthly maintenance | AED 26.25 when average monthly balance is below AED 3,000, unless exempt |
| Account closure within six months | AED 26.25 |
| First cheque book | Free |
| Additional 25-leaf cheque book | AED 26.25 |
| Teller transaction | First six monthly transactions free; AED 10.50 thereafter |
| Stop payment per cheque leaf | AED 52.50, with police-letter requirements noted by DIB |
| Manager’s cheque in AED | AED 31.50 for DIB customers |
| International transfer via online banking | AED 36.75 on the standard schedule; an eligible XTRA package may waive DIB’s online transfer fee |
The maintenance-fee rule deserves attention. The KFS says the account can be opened with no balance, but a low average balance can still generate a monthly fee. It lists exemptions for the payment account attached to active DIB finance, an account linked to an active Wakala or investment deposit, and priority segments such as Aayan and Wajaha.
A salary-package waiver should be confirmed in your welcome documents. Save the KFS and fee schedule that apply when you open the account; promotions and charges can change.
What happens if your salary stops?
This is the practical risk many customers overlook. A salary transfer can stop because you change employer, enter a notice period, take unpaid leave or leave the UAE. The account does not necessarily close automatically, but salary-linked privileges can end.
Possible consequences include:
- loss of a package-based maintenance-fee waiver;
- reassessment of the account under the standard AED 3,000 average-balance rule;
- loss of promotional transfer or lifestyle benefits;
- review of a credit card or finance facility linked to salary assignment;
- requests for updated employment information; and
- recovery of a joining reward if campaign clawback terms apply.
Before resigning, ask DIB how the account, cards and any finance will be treated. Keep enough money to cover rent cheques and direct debits during the change. Never assume your final salary or end-of-service payment will remain immediately available if you have outstanding liabilities.
How to open a DIB salary account
- Confirm the product. Ask whether you are opening the standard Al Islami Current Account, an employer payroll account or DIB XTRA.
- Check your employer. Verify employer listing and the salary threshold for your exact package.
- Prepare current documents. Passport, visa, Emirates ID, address evidence and salary certificate should be valid and consistent.
- Apply through an official channel. Use DIB’s official digital onboarding route or a branch.
- Read the KFS and charges. Confirm the balance rule, fee waiver, cheque-book terms and closure fee.
- Give HR the correct IBAN. Confirm when the first salary credit will arrive.
- Activate the card and digital access. Set secure limits and alerts.
- Order cheques only if needed. Check the spelling of your name and reserve rent funds before issuing them.
- Verify any joining reward. Record the qualifying salary, products, spending deadline and expected payment date.

DIB salary account versus alternatives
DIB versus Emirates NBD
DIB is the clearer choice when Sharia-compliant banking is essential. Emirates NBD has a larger everyday-service profile for many Dubai expats and publishes a standard salary threshold of AED 5,000. Compare the full details in our DIB versus Emirates NBD guide and the dedicated Emirates NBD salary-account guide.
DIB versus FAB
FAB may suit someone with an Abu Dhabi employer or an existing FAB relationship, while DIB is stronger for customers prioritising Islamic banking. Our DIB versus FAB comparison covers salary thresholds, branches, transfers and account structure.
DIB versus Wio
Wio is more app-led and particularly attractive for Saving Spaces and multicurrency management. DIB offers branches, established Islamic products and traditional cheque facilities. Many residents can combine a salary bank with a separate digital savings account. Read Wio versus DIB before deciding whether one or both fit your setup.
The right account depends on salary, employer, rent-payment method and savings habits. Add the costs to your full relocation plan rather than treating the joining reward as free money. Our Dubai moving budget explains the cash buffer needed for housing and setup.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum salary for a Dubai Islamic Bank salary account?
DIB’s employer-package page states AED 8,000 for its XTRA salary account. The separate 2026 XTRA campaign page displays joining-bonus bands from AED 5,000. Eligibility can depend on employer listing and package, so confirm your route directly with DIB.
Can I open a DIB current account without transferring salary?
Yes, subject to approval. The standard Al Islami Current Account is available to eligible UAE nationals and legal residents over 18. Its KFS says it can be opened with no balance, but the AED 26.25 monthly fee can apply when the average balance is below AED 3,000 and no exemption applies.
Does the DIB salary account earn profit?
The Al Islami Current Account does not earn investment profit. Consider a separate DIB savings or Wakala product if you want expected profit, and read that product’s KFS.
Is the DIB cheque book free?
The first 25-leaf cheque book is free under the current published schedule. Additional 25-leaf books cost AED 26.25.
Can non-Muslims open a DIB account?
Yes. DIB’s eligibility is not restricted by religion. Non-Muslim residents can use its Sharia-compliant accounts, cards, transfers and financing products.
Can I open the account before receiving my Emirates ID?
The resident current-account KFS requires a valid Emirates ID, passport and residence visa. Limited alternatives may exist for other customer types, but a normal expat salary account is easiest after residency is active.
How much is the DIB XTRA joining bonus for expats?
The salary-transfer component shown on DIB’s 2026 campaign page ranges from AED 250 to AED 3,000 for expatriates, depending on salary. Higher advertised totals require additional qualifying products and conditions.
What if I change jobs?
Tell DIB and ask how the package will change. Salary-linked fee waivers and benefits may stop, while cards, finance and outstanding cheques continue to require attention.
Is DIB better than Emirates NBD?
DIB is better aligned with customers who prioritise Islamic banking. Emirates NBD may be more convenient for some employers and has a published AED 5,000 standard salary threshold. Compare the exact account, not only the bank brands.
Final verdict
A Dubai Islamic Bank salary account is a strong option for an expat who wants Sharia-compliant everyday banking, rent cheques, digital services and access to branches. The standard account costs are reasonable when you maintain the required balance or qualify for a waiver.
The main caution is the marketing structure around DIB XTRA. Different official pages refer to an AED 8,000 employer-package threshold and campaign bonus bands beginning at AED 5,000. Get the exact package, employer eligibility and reward conditions in writing. Once those details are clear, DIB can work well as a primary salary bank—especially when Islamic banking is an important part of your decision.
